When Silence Feels Like Failure
OPENING PRAYER:
God, I'm afraid of what I'll hear if I stop moving. I'm afraid of what I'll feel if I'm silent. Give me the courage to sit with You anyway, knowing You're not waiting to condemn me, You're waiting to comfort me.
"But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed." Luke 5:16 (NIV)
This verse is easy to gloss over, but the word "often" changes everything. This wasn't a one-time retreat or an annual spiritual retreat. This was Jesus' rhythm. He regularly, intentionally withdrew from the crowds, the needs, the noise. If the Son of God needed solitude to stay connected to the Father, how much more do we?
REFLECT:
Pastor Carter asked a question that should unsettle all of us: "When was the last time you were in a solitary place?" Not distracted. Not multitasking. Not scrolling while half-watching TV. Truly alone. Truly quiet. For most of us, the answer is... we can't remember. And that's not an accident. We've engineered our lives to avoid silence because silence forces us to face what we've been running from.
He pushed further: "Why is it easier to keep being busy than to stop, be silent, and listen?" Because busyness feels productive. Silence feels like failure. If we're moving, we're accomplishing. If we're still, we're falling behind. But Jesus didn't just teach rest, He modeled it. "Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed." Not because He was weak, but because He knew where His strength came from. He knew that without silence, without solitude, without space to hear His Father's voice, He would default to the pressure of the crowd instead of the purpose of heaven.
This is the question we have to answer: Is there a connection between the stress in your life and your ability to hear the voice of Jesus? The answer is almost always yes. When we're overwhelmed, it's not because life got harder, it's because we stopped withdrawing. We stopped listening. We started trusting in success, work, money, and ourselves. And now we're running on fumes, wondering why rest feels impossible.
APPLY:
Find a place where you can be physically alone. It doesn't have to be a mountaintop, it can be your car, your backyard, or a quiet corner of your home. Set a timer for ten minutes. No phone. No music. No distractions. Just sit. Breathe slowly. Don't try to pray perfectly or think profound thoughts. Just be still. If your mind races, let it. Don't fight it. This is practice, not performance.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will be still before Jesus and rest in Him.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, I've been running from silence because I'm afraid of what I'll find there. But You're not waiting in the quiet to shame me, You're waiting to heal me. Help me believe that stillness isn't wasted time; it's where I'll finally hear You. Give me the courage to withdraw, to listen, to rest in Your presence. Amen.
