Going in Silence
OPENING PRAYER:
Lord, this week has been an invitation to something I've resisted for too long. As I step back into the noise of my life, help me carry this stillness with me. Let rest become a rhythm, not just a retreat.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV)
This is Jesus' most tender invitation in all of Scripture. He doesn't command the weary to work harder or the burdened to be stronger. He invites them to come, to learn, to rest. The Greek word for "rest" here is anapausis, it means cessation, refreshment, recovery. It's not just a nap; it's restoration of the soul. And it only comes from one source: Jesus Himself.
REFLECT:
Pastor Carter ended the message with four simple words: "Go in silence… resting in Jesus." After everything he typed, every question, every Scripture, every uncomfortable pause, he didn't send people out with a battle cry or a challenge to do more. He sent them out to rest. Because the point of the entire message wasn't to add something else to your overwhelmed life. It was to strip away everything that's drowning out the voice of the One who can actually give you rest.
The final question he asked is the one you have to answer now: "Will you be still before Jesus and rest in Him?" Not "Can you?" Not "Should you?" Will you? Because rest is a choice. It's not something that happens to you when life finally calms down. It's something you choose even when, especially when, everything in you is screaming to keep moving. You choose to stop striving. You choose to follow instead of lead. You choose to sit in silence and trust that God is still working even when you're not.
This week, you've been invited into something countercultural, something that feels risky, maybe even irresponsible. You've been invited to believe that your worth isn't tied to your productivity, that God's love for you doesn't increase with your effort, and that rest isn't something you earn, it's something you receive. The invitation hasn't expired. Jesus is still saying, "Come to Me." The question is: will you keep running, or will you finally come?
APPLY:
Before this week ends, answer this question in writing: "What do I need to change or eliminate to spend more time with Jesus and hear His voice?" Don't overthink it. Write down the first thing that comes to mind. Then commit to changing one thing this week. Maybe it's setting your phone down an hour before bed. Maybe it's saying no to a commitment that's draining you. Maybe it's carving out ten minutes every morning to sit in silence before the chaos starts. Whatever it is, write it down, tell someone you trust, and do it. Rest is a decision before it becomes a reality.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will be still before Jesus and rest in Him.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Jesus, this week You've been inviting me to stop running and start resting. Forgive me for all the times I've chosen noise over Your voice, busyness over Your presence, striving over surrender. I don't want to go back to the way things were. Teach me to carry this stillness into my everyday life. Help me remember that I don't have to carry it all alone, You're yoked with me, leading me, holding me. I'm weary. I'm burdened. And I'm finally ready to come to You. Amen.
