Bamboo Roots and Kingdom Growth

OPENING PRAYER:

Father, in a world obsessed with instant success, teach me the sacred discipline of slow growth. Help me trust that what You're building beneath the surface is more valuable than anything I could rush into existence.

READ: Proverbs 13:11 (NLT)

"Wealth from get rich quick schemes quickly disappears. Wealth from hard work grows over time." Proverbs 13:11 (NLT)

The Hebrew phrase for "hard work" in this proverb literally refers to physical labor done with one's hands—daily, steady, faithful work. Solomon values consistency and patience over shortcuts and schemes, a countercultural message in his time and ours.

REFLECT:

Pastor Christian Hallberg shared a striking image from nature: bamboo plants spend their first five years growing nothing visible above ground. For five years, all the growth happens in the roots, spreading deep and wide beneath the soil. Then, when the foundation is finally strong enough, the bamboo shoots up dozens of feet in mere weeks. That's the kind of growth God wants for us—deep roots first, visible growth later.

But we're surrounded by messages telling us we can have it all now. Christian talked about his nephew and the next generation, already thinking about money and success at eighteen, watching social media influencers sell the dream of fast wealth. Day trading apps, sports betting, side hustles that promise quick cash - the lure is real and it's everywhere. One groomsman at a wedding told Christian that his college friends were spending hundreds, even thousands of dollars on sports betting in a single weekend, chasing the high of instant wealth. They don't realize they're not building roots... they're building addictions and terrible financial habits that will haunt them for years. God's way is different. Build slowly. Save intentionally. Invest patiently. Create a root system so strong that when growth comes, it's sustainable and real.

APPLY:

Take one practical step toward slow, steady financial growth this week. If you don't have a savings account, open one. If you have debt, make a plan to pay down even a small amount extra. If you've been tempted by get-rich-quick schemes, delete the app or unsubscribe from the emails. Write down one five-year financial goal and one small action you can take this month to move toward it. Remember: bamboo roots grow in the dark where no one sees. Your faithfulness matters even when it feels invisible.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will put in the big rocks first.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Lord, give me patience to build slowly and faithfully. Protect me from the lure of quick success and easy money. Help me trust that what You're growing in me beneath the surface is worth the wait.
