Why am I here? To Act Justly, Love Mercy, & Walk Humbly

OPENING PRAYER:

God, open our hearts to what you have to say to us today.

READ: Micah 6:8 (NIV)

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8 (NIV)

REFLECT:

Micah 6:8 is one of my favorite verses from scripture. Micah makes a battle cry over us – one for our souls. He calls the people of Judah out for their behavior and wages God’s “lawsuit against them” (title of the chapter where this verse is found) for the way that they’ve been living.

The same lawsuit could be brought against most of us in this day and age. We seek first our kingdom instead of God’s. We look out for “number 1” and not for others. We turn to God only when we are at our breaking point, or it is convenient.

This verse reminds us that this is not God’s intention for our lives and that it is also not easy to live the way we’re supposed to.

God, through Micah the prophet, makes himself very clear here. There are basic behaviors that God requires of us to live the way he expects us to: act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly. These things don’t exist exclusively by themselves but are a package deal. If we are living with God’s intention at heart, these things will feed each other and keep us in step with God’s purpose for our lives.

APPLY:

Reflect on God’s intentions here in this verse from Micah and how that might change your outlook on your day-to-day. Today, look for ways to live more closely aligned with this battle cry for God’s people.

CLOSING PRAYER:

God, thank you for your intention over our lives. Help us live it well.
