Beyond the Walls
OPENING PRAYER:
Spirit of God, break down the walls of our hearts that keep us from seeing others as You see them. Lead us to love beyond our comfort zones and embrace those You place in our path. Amen.
"Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’"
Matthew 25:41-45 (NIV)
REFLECT:
In Pastor Christian Hallberg’s message this past weekend, he shared a story about a childhood rivalry with a boy named TJ, which was fueled by misunderstanding and differences. As he grew older, he realized that TJ came from a broken family, and he regretted not reaching out with compassion. This story serves as a powerful reminder of how easy it is to build walls instead of bridges.
In Matthew 25, Jesus warns against the dangers of neglecting those in need. The goats in the parable failed to see the face of Christ in the vulnerable, choosing instead to focus inwardly. Christian highlighted how our culture often encourages us to insulate ourselves, caring only for our immediate circle. Yet, Jesus calls us to look beyond our walls and see the broader family He has given us.
Reflect on the foster care crisis mentioned in the message. Many children are in need of love and support, yet they remain unseen by society. This weekend, we were challenged to break down the walls of indifference and extend our love to these children, seeing them as part of our family in Christ.
As you meditate on this passage, consider the walls you have built in your own life. Who have you overlooked or ignored? Ask God to open your eyes to those in need and give you the courage to reach out in love.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will defend the vulnerable with my time or resources. Pathway partners with CarePortal to help meet the needs of those in crisis in our community. Our Foster Care Awareness website (pathwaychurch.com/fostercare) has more info on how you can help.
If you would like to learn more about other ways you can serve, like babysitting, providing temporary respite, what it takes to be a licensed foster family, or helping with food or prayer, Pathway Church will be hosting an informational meeting on August 17, 6:00pm at the Westlink Campus. This is a no pressure meeting to discover how everyone can play a part in supporting families. You can find out more by clicking here.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, thank You for breaking down the walls that separate us from You and from others. Help us to see beyond our own lives and embrace those You have called us to love. Amen.
