Forgiving Discussion Guide

BIG IDEA:
Forgive as your heavenly Father has forgiven you.
TEACHING POINTS:

• Jesus has a high standard for Forgiveness.

• Our ability to forgive comes from the forgiveness we received from God.

• God’s forgiveness is real and the only way to help the world heal.

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 18:21-35

Discussion Guide will be posted on Sunday at 3pm.

OPENING QUESTIONS:

1. Complete this sentence: "I wish everyone could..."

2. What is the worst trouble you got into as a kid?

IN THE WORD:

1. Do you think Peter believes forgiving seven times is a high number or low number? What does Jesus think about how many times we should forgive? Matthew 18:21-22

2. A talent was worth almost 20 years of wages for a laborer in Jesus’ day. The amount owed by the servant is equal to about 200,000 years of pay. Why do you think Jesus uses this great of a hyperbole? What does he want us to learn? Matthew 18:23-27

3. The fellow servant owes the man 100 denarii or a hundred day’s worth of wages. At the current minimum wage, we could guess this to be around 10 to 12 thousand dollars today depending on hours worked. With that knowledge, how do you feel about the man’s treatment of his fellow servant? Matthew 18:28-30

4. What does the master’s response to the servant teach us about God’s standard of forgiveness? Matthew 18:32-35

CONTINUED LEARNING:

Read Colossians 3:13. How can we “bear” others that are difficult for us to get along with?
