Joy: Week 2 - Day 3

OPENING PRAYER:

Dear Lord, thank you for the community of believers you have placed us with. Help us to see the needs of others and to selflessly give to those in need.

READ: Philippians 4:14

14 “Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles.”

REFLECT:

Sharing in troubles is where a small town or community really shines. We generally rise to the occasion when there is a tragedy and a family in need. Poor folks open their wallets and give what they can for funeral expenses and GoFundMe campaigns. An outpouring of love through cash donations. Because we know the simple truth that hard-earned money will make a difference to the family in need and if we are ever in that situation, we know others will help us. There was a young mom who suddenly and tragically passed away a few years ago. What struck me at the time was the outpouring of appreciation for the times that she had rallied the community to donate items to families in need. Christians give their money to the needy because God commands it. Does knowing this always make it easy? No way!

APPLY:

There’s a little pep talk I give myself when I feel like keeping my money to myself. I remind myself to whom the money really belongs (God). I have to remind myself to give joyfully and not begrudgingly. I recall the times that money felt “tight” and times it felt like abundance. Here’s the truth: The only time I feel content with my finances is when I’m giving. The times my family has felt scared for the future is when we are holding on tightly to our cash. Today, reflect on your internal dialogue when it comes to giving. When you give and when you don’t, what do you tell yourself?

CLOSING PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, there’s so much trouble and heartache going around! Please direct our giving. Help us to see the need and to know what to do. We desire to share in the trouble of others. Amen
